New Passenger Terminal

Complements new Air Traffic Control Tower

A new gleaming passenger terminal, spacious and bright, is now serving airline passengers in Hyannis.
Built on schedule and within available funds, the 35,000 sq. ft. facility opened its doors December 15, 2011, complementing a new 85-ft. air traffic control tower which went into service November 2, 2011.
On entering the terminal, a passenger or visitor is met by ticketing agents for Cape Air, Nantucket Airlines and Island Air. To the left are pleasant and roomy waiting areas for islands-bound flights, baggage claim, car rental desks and a new conference room. Tucked delightfully into a corner is Michele Kennedy’s busy art gallery.
The opposite wing of the terminal serves Boston-bound Cape Air passengers with secure screening and waiting facilities. Nearby is space for the new Mad Platter Restaurant, due to open soon, and for retail sales.
The overall terminal and tower projects, financed with federal and state grants and local bond financing, will be complete in the spring of 2012 when the old terminal and tower are demolished and all site work is completed
Work continues on the new airport access road from Route 132 and Attucks Lane, including installation of traffic signal, pole relocation, surface paving and pavement marking.
On the “air side” of the new terminal, crews are poised to complete work on a new aircraft parking apron that will be in full use once the old facilities are demolished.
There is now parking for 588 cars directly in front and to the north of the new terminal. During peak seasonal demand overflow lots, served by shuttle buses, will be opened.
Interesting fact: when the entire project is complete, contractors will have installed more than 6,300 plantings, including trees and shrubs, on airport property.
Taxis serve the airport and, for those who prefer to use public transportation, the Cape Cod RTA’s Villager bus has upgraded to regularly scheduled service as of March 2012.
More than 450 members of the Cape’s business community turned out February 15 for an after-hours reception hosted by the Cape Cod, Yarmouth and Hyannis Area chambers of Commerce, and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
A dedication ceremony is tentatively planned for May 2012.
The Cape Cod region’s new airport is the consequence of years of planning by Town of Barnstable officials, members of the Barnstable Municipal Airport Commission, the Cape Cod Commission, state aviation officials, the Federal Aviation Administration and airport staff.
