The Town of Barnstable has updated its Open Space and Recreation Plan, last adopted in 2010. The plan allows the community to identify and evaluate goals, challenges, opportunities and priorities for open space protection, land management, and the provision of recreational opportunities. Planning for our Town’s “green infrastructure” of water, land, forests, wildlife habitat, parks, recreation areas, and trails is important to our economic future, community identity, and quality of life.
The plan is developed to comply with guidance from the Massachusetts Division of Conservation Services and will be submitted to that agency for approval. An approved plan is necessary for the Town to qualify for certain land acquisition financial assistance provided by the Commonwealth. It is also an important opportunity to re-assess community needs and priorities for open space protection and the provision of recreational opportunities.
How to Get Involved
The Barnstable Planning and Development Department invites the community to comment on the Town’s Open Space and Recreation Plan at a public meeting on Thursday, March 8th at 6 pm in the Town Hall Selectmens Conference Room at 367 Main Street, Hyannis. The department is holding a public meeting on the 2018 Barnstable Open Space and Recreation Plan, which comprehensively examines Barnstable’s open spaces and recreational facilities and outlines goals for land preservation, fostering agricultural activity, and enhancing active and passive recreation opportunities. Any Barnstable residents with comments about the plan which explores trails, beaches, ball fields, play areas, skating rinks, golf courses and simply preserving the beauty of Barnstable for future generations, are encouraged to attend.
At the public meeting, a brief overview of the 2018 Open Space and Recreation Plan will be presented to the public starting at 6 pm. Following the presentation, residents will have an opportunity to review the plan that covers the Town recreation, conservation and wildlife habitat areas and comment on what land preservation initiatives and recreation opportunities are important to them.
A copy of the 2018 Open Space and Recreation Plan is available for review on the Town Open Space and Recreation Plan website, found at www.town.barnstable.ma.us. The Planning and Development Department will be taking public comments on the plan between Friday February 16, 2018 and Tuesday March 12, 2018 at noon. Residents and community organizations are encouraged to review the plan and attend the public hearing with comments or questions.
